Stewart's Caring Place Dr. Stewart Surloff, a podiatrist from Akron, was in the midst of raising his two young daughters, Shelby and Abbey, with his wife Mimi when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in February of 2001. Throughout his journey with cancer he often wondered what other people did when faced with a diagnosis who didn’t have a built in support system of family and friends like he had. While facing his struggle he found “There is more to cancer than chemotherapy and surgery” and so it was a dream of his to open a facility that offered non-medical support services to those affected by cancer in his community. Through an endowment left when he passed, Mimi Surloff led a group of dedicated community members to establish Stewart’s Caring Place in 2003. In October 2004, Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center opened it’s doors to the community. Today, Stewart’s Caring Place continues to carry Dr. Surloff’s legacy on by providing supportive services and programs, in a relaxed and caring environment, all at no cost, to individuals and families touched by cancer.

Cancer Schmancer Movement Cancer Schmancer’s mission is to save lives by transforming the nation’s current sick care system into one that focuses on genuine health care. I am a uterine cancer survivor, but was misdiagnosed and mistreated for a peri-menopausal condition I didn't have. My doctors told me I was experiencing symptoms because of a long list of reasons – I was too young, too thin, even eating too much spinach! I was prescribed hormones to treat the symptoms, but my doctors didn’t order the proper diagnostic tests. At the time, I didn’t know to ask why or why not, because I was just happy to be told I was too young for something! But finally after an endometrial biopsy, my greatest fear was confirmed; I had cancer. It took me two years and eight doctors before finally being told I had a gynecologic cancer. I felt betrayed not only by my own body, but by the medical community. In 2002, I wrote Cancer Schmancer, to tell my story of survival so what happened to me wouldn’t happen to others. After I went on my book tour, I realized that what happened to me had happened to so many women like me. And so it was then I realized the book was not the end but rather the beginning of a life mission to improve women's healthcare in America. Toward this end, I have started the Cancer Schmancer Movement and Cancer Schmancer Foundation to transform women from patients into medical consumers, and to shift this nation's priority from searching for a cancer cure towards prevention and early detection of cancer. -Fran Drescher, President

Telling Others About Your Cancer (ACS) Finding out you have cancer can be overwhelming for you as well as friends and family. People often don’t know what to say. They may feel sad and uncomfortable and might be afraid of upsetting you. They might be frightened about the possibility of losing you. Sometimes people find it easier to say nothing because they’re afraid of saying the wrong thing. Some people find it easy to talk, while others may become overly careful or act too cheerful.

Image Reborn Our mission is to provide no-cost renewal retreats to those diagnosed with breast cancer and to support them in living rich and fulfilling lives. Established in 1998 by Dr. Renato Saltz, a visionary plastic surgeon, our organization was born from the recognition of a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of cancer care: the emotional healing and rebuilding process. Despite the exceptional medical attention women receive during their cancer journey, their profound emotional needs often remain unaddressed. Today, there's a growing acknowledgment of this gap in care, prompting cancer providers to explore integrating emotional support into their treatment plans. Recognizing its indispensable role in healing and overall well-being, emotional support is now considered essential for all cancer patients.
