The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is the primary group that determines which screening methods are recommended for different cancer types, at what age screening should begin, and special circumstances that may necessitate earlier screening. The American Cancer Society, NCCN, and several other organizations have their own screening recommendations as well.
According to the USPSTF, these are the 5 types of cancer for which screening is recommended:
Screening guidelines are in place for people who are asymptomatic (not experiencing any unusual symptoms) with an average risk for cancer. Your family history, inherited gene mutations, personal medical history, and other risk factors will be taken into account to determine if you should be screened earlier than recommended.
If you are symptomatic in any way--please see your doctor to investigate further. Possible signs of cancer may include chronic cough, blood in stool, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, new lumps or growths anywhere on your body, bloody mucous, chronic fatigue, unexplained pain, changes in eating habits or bowel habits, changes in breast texture or color, changes in urinary habits, mole and skin changes, etc.

United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) The US Preventive Services Task Force makes recommendations about the effectiveness of specific preventive care services for patients without obvious related signs or symptoms to improve the health of people nationwide. It bases its recommendations on the evidence of both the benefits and harms of the service and an assessment of the balance. The USPSTF does not consider the costs of providing a service in this assessment. The USPSTF recognizes that clinical decisions involve more considerations than evidence alone. Clinicians should understand the evidence but individualize decision-making to the specific patient or situation. Similarly, the USPSTF notes that policy and coverage decisions involve considerations in addition to the evidence of clinical benefits and harms.
The USPSTF is committed to mitigating the health inequities that prevent many people from fully benefiting from preventive services. Systemic or structural racism results in policies and practices, including health care delivery, that can lead to inequities in health. The USPSTF recognizes that race, ethnicity, and gender are all social rather than biological constructs. However, they are also often important predictors of health risk. The USPSTF is committed to helping reverse the negative impacts of systemic and structural racism, gender-based discrimination, bias, and other sources of health inequities, and their effects on health, throughout its work.

You can pick up on early warning signs by paying close attention to changes in your body. If you notice something new or different that lasts several weeks – and several weeks is key – reach out to your health care provider. Not every symptom that could be cancer is cancer. ColonscopyAssist is a program that promotes affordable colon cancer screening and is available as a free resource to the public. Financial assistance is available for patients unable to afford the services. The ColonoscopyAssist program was founded in 2010 as a way to remove financial barriers to colorectal cancer screening for the uninsured. The program is run with the belief that if colorectal cancer screenings are made easily accessible and affordable, more individuals will choose to get screened. Today hundreds of providers in over 30 states share in our vision by participating in the program and helping patients to get screened quickly and affordably. The organization works directly with communities with high CRC incidence to educate about the importance of early detection and bring awareness that colon cancer screenings are very accessible even for those without health insurance.
